How to export your Squarespace website

Squarespace gives you one XML file with part of your site. Here is how to get it and what it leaves out.

The short answer

Squarespace exports to one .xml file in a WordPress format. It is the only format offered, even if you are not moving to WordPress. Squarespace explains it here.

How to export

  1. 1

    Check the site is ready

The site has to be published and its availability set to Public. Trial sites cannot export.

  2. 2

    Open the panel

Open Import & export content in your site settings.

  3. 3

    Export

Click Export, then the WordPress icon. If you have more than one blog page, choose the main one and click Export.

  4. 4

    Download

Wait for it to process, then click Download.

  5. 5

    Export products and contacts separately

Products export to a CSV of up to 10,000 from the Products panel. Contacts export to a CSV by mailing list or in bulk.

What does not come with you

The file holds layout pages, one blog page with its posts, text and image blocks, and gallery pages. It leaves out album, cover, index, info, calendar, portfolio and store pages, content in page-specific headers and footers, any second blog, dropdowns, audio, product and video blocks, drafts, style settings and custom CSS.

The product CSV leaves out additional product information, customer reviews, featured images, image alt text and variant images.

Before you cancel anything

Page redirects are set under Developer tools, then URL mappings, and the homepage cannot be redirected. See the Squarespace steps. A domain registered through Squarespace can be transferred away, which can take up to 15 days and does not cancel your site. See the transfer steps.

Our advice, on any platform: keep the old site live until the new one is tested, and put the page redirects on the new host. A redirect set on the old platform only runs while your domain still points there.

Exporting from Squarespace

Will it import into anything but WordPress?

The file is in a WordPress format. Anything else has to read that format or the content gets moved another way.

My site expired. Can I still export?

Squarespace says reactivating may recover the content, but it may already be deleted.

Still have questions? Call the office or send us your site and a person will take a look.
