Squarespace exports part of a site as one XML file. A lot is left out, including your design. Here is what you can take and what your options are.
What you can take from Squarespace
The export is one XML file in a WordPress format, and it is the only format offered. Read Squarespace on this.

It leaves out style settings, custom CSS, store pages, album, calendar, index and portfolio pages, any second blog, audio, product and video blocks, and drafts.

The export gives you a head start on content. Your design has to be rebuilt in every case.

Can I import my Squarespace export into another Squarespace site?
No. Squarespace says the file cannot be imported into another Squarespace site.
Will my images come with it?
Squarespace warns that on a self-hosted WordPress import, images may stay as links to Squarespace and break after you cancel. Download what you need before you cancel.
Can I export from a trial site?
No. Squarespace says trial sites cannot export.
